Artificial intelligence algorithms have proved to be as good or better than physicians at reading scans or images of biopsy samples. AI is also used in clinical decision support, cognitive behavior therapy, to assist surgical robots, to detect treatment mistakes and workflow inefficiencies, and for the earlier identification of patient risks.
What is the real – as opposed to the fanciful – promise of AI in healthcare, and how will it change the way that medicine is practiced? What are the obstacles and potential pitfalls? What will medical practice in 2030 look like?
FDA has approved some assistive algorithms, but still struggles with the appropriate risk assessment and regulatory framework for artificial intelligence generally, particularly machine learning algorithms that changes themselves as they acquire new data.
