End-to-End Data Integration, from Health Records through Medical Devices
Historically, medical devices have stood apart from clinical records, with limited bi-directional interaction. Some aggregated data or limited updates from medical devices may be entered into a patient’s EHR, but the linkage has generally not been very ambitious for many reasons.
It has now become much easier to connect medical devices to the larger ecosystem of healthcare data and to break down existing silos, making it possible to think about more tightly coupling healthcare data from traditional clinical system such as electronic health records with remote medical devices sent home with patients used to diagnose, monitor and treat illness. For example, a remote device could send patient data back to an electronic health record. This imported EHR data could then be analyzed by a combination of human clinical experts and/or algorithms (e.g., artificial intelligence/machine learning) in combination with other patient data to continually tune the treatment plan for the patient, perhaps even sending instructions back to a therapeutic medical device to modify treatment.
However, healthcare data interoperability continues to be a major challenge on any front, including medical devices. Thus another challenge has been scaling up the integration of these solutions so that one provider system can integrate with many digital health tools easily, and so that one digital health tool can easily integrate across provider systems.
In this webinar, we will provide an overview of this broad, but important topic, and examine some of the key challenges both from the point of view of medical device manufacturers (and other digital health providers) and of provider systems attempting to incorporate these tools into their care delivery.
