Brooks-LaSure has more than two decades of experience in health policy and played a crucial part in the passage of the Affordable Care Act.

Last week President Biden nominated Chiquita Brooks-LaSure to the position of CMS Administrator. Currently a managing director at Manatt Health, Brooks-LaSure has more than 20 years of health policy experience, and has directly worked in CMS as deputy director for policy at the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, and as director of coverage policy at HHS. She also played a part in the passage of the Affordable Care Act. If confirmed by the Senate, Brooks-LaSure will make history as the first Black woman to run the agency.

“We congratulate Chiquita Brooks-LaSure on her nomination to lead CMS and we look forward to working closely with her if confirmed by the Senate. Her strong experience at both HHS and CMS has prepared her well for this important role,” said AdvaMed President and CEO Scott Whitaker in a statement. “Recent bipartisan rules released by CMS, such as the MCIT rule, will save and improve countless seniors’ lives by giving them access to life-saving technologies they otherwise wouldn’t be able to access. Likewise, recent changes to the 1970s-era Anti-Kickback Statute moved us away from the outdated fee-for-service model and closer to the value-based care that has such widespread bipartisan support. We look forward to working with the next CMS Administrator and her team as they implement these patient-focused rules, as well as to working with them on other smart policies that would improve the lives of so many patients across the country.”
