A cybersecurity researcher identified eight vulnerabilities, ranging in severity from low to critical, in Smiths Medical’s Medfusion 4000 wireless infusion pumps. According to the Department of Homeland Security’s Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT), these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to gain access and control of the pump.

Smiths Medical says it is highly unlikely that these vulnerabilities could be exploited in a clinical setting, but have released technical details of the cybersecurity exploit and recommendations for protecting against it. A software update will be rolled out by January of next year to protect against such future exploits.
